Deployable Engineering Workshop Ready For Action

G3 Systems' Deployable Engineering Workshop, contracted by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), is almost ready to enter service, Derek Ford, project manager at G3 Systems Portland-based engineering facility, announced.

The Deployable Engineering Workshop (DEW) is designed to provide military engineers with a range of tools and equipments housed in a deployable workspace that provides the capability to allow manufacture, modification and repair of engineer resource and specialist equipment. This was achieved within a hybrid design through the configuration of Common DROPS container modules that are tailored to meet individual trade requirements, and soft wall work areas that provide required covered work spaces.

Final trials are taking place across the UK before the system is finally entered into service in 2007. It is likely that the versatile system will soon be deployed into operational theatre to assist the UK's armed forces.

Common DROPS Containers
The system's core building block and method of transportation uses multiple DROPS integrated CSC-approved 20-foot ISO containers. All DROPS containers include FEPS (UK MoD power generator) compatible electrical interface panels. The container systems are integrated with a range of machine tools and equipment to enable various trades to operate effectively in the field. The system incorporates 12 containers with the trades either allocated as single use or shared.

  • ME Fabricator and Blacksmith – two containers
  • ME Carpenter and Joiner – two containers
  • ME Fitter Equipment and Welder – one shared container
  • ME Fitter Utility and & Petroleum Fitter ACR (Air Conditioning & Refrigeration) – one shared container
  • ME Electrician and ME Fitter H&P (Heating & Plumbing) – one shared container
  • Planning Staff & Draughtsman – one shared container
  • ME Building and Structural Draughtsman – one shared container
  • Main Work Area Storage Container – doubles as a Stores Container when Main Work Area Shelter is deployed
  • Forward Deployment and Utility Container (FDUC) – provides a forward deployable capability independent of the main hybrid. System acts as a general Utility Container when not on deployment
  • RACU Container – housing the environmental conditioning equipment for the Main Work Area shelter

Soft Walled Work Areas
Complementary soft walled work spaces (provided by Ably Shelters) provide environmentally conditioned and spacious working areas integrated with the containers housing the machinery and tooling for each trade.

Main Work Area (MWA)
The self-build MWA (provided by Ably Shelters) provides a large work area (242 metres squared W 11.5m x L 21m), allowing full vehicular access and handling of the large work pieces. The shelter provides an effective entry way at the centre to ensure that a variety of work pieces, machinery and vehicles can not only gain entry from either end of the structure, but that unnecessary movement of other maintenance tasks to allow entry / egress is eliminated. The system can be integrated with up to four 20- ft containers (2 on each side) using breezeway attachments which provide weatherproof connections between the trade containers.

In the future, other trades and services could easily be integrated into this system. DEW is a truly versatile system providing the UK MoD with the agility to deploy tradesmen quickly to the most inhospitable places, at the same time allowing them to perform their tasks to a high standard.
