Combined Instrument Repair Facility (CIRF) handed over to UK MoD

Portland, Dorset – Cluster Leader, Brigadier Ian Simpson, today visited the G3 Systems Integration Facility to inspect two of the 13 Combined Instrument Repair Facilities (CIRF’s) being supplied to the UK MOD over the coming months.

Accompanying Ian were Colonel David Thorpe DEME (A) and a number of colleagues from the Workshop Support Services IPT who procured the equipment.

Since the initial contract award in March 2007, G3 Systems have produced 7 units, with a further 6 set for delivery by mid-March 2008.

Each of the 20’ ISO DROPS Containers are designed for the repair and maintenance of both laser and day and night sights housed in a variety of vehicles such as: Challenger 2; Warrior; Scimitar and the forthcoming FRES range of vehicles.

These 13 units replace a variety of vehicles currently in-service with the MOD and operated by the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME).

The workshops are fully air-conditioned and have bespoke Laminar-flow work benches to provide a clean working environment. The DROPS containers house all the equipment needed to service the sights and are designed to be operated whilst truck mounted. A dropdown platform to one side of each truck aids access and allows equipment to be moved into the workspace via the container mounted jib-arm.

All equipment is stowed within the parameters of the ISO frame to allow for easy shipping by land, air and sea.

Simon Higginbottom, G3 Systems Project Manager for CIRF stated that ‘Numerous challenges were faced and overcome during the design and production of this system. A great deal of equipment such as the lifting hoists are located on the outside of the containers and these items had to fit within the ISO frame without compromising internal workspace’ Simon added ‘We are pleased that we were able to accomplish this and deliver the equipment on time and budget to the customer’.
